42 (Nellie Stewart) 1931. Silver gelatin print, inscribed by Nellie Stewart on original backing and image, and signed by Cazneaux below on backing, 14.1 x 11.3cm. Slight fading around edges. JLG3398 Inscribed "To Mr Eric Howell in gratitude and for remembrance of April 22nd 1931 Sydney". Nellie Stewart died on 20 June 1931 (born 1861). She gave her last performance (the balcony scene from Romeo & Juliet) at Mosman Town Hall. She was chosen to sing an ode to Australia at the opening of the first Federal Parliament at the Melbourne Exhibition Buildings in May 1901. |

44 Grossardi (Self Portrait), 1933. Silver gelatin print, titled, inscribed "To Max Dupain", signed and dated below on original backing, 13.3 x 10.9cm. Slight foxing to backing. JLG3562 Provenance: Max Dupain estate. It is interesting to note that the title of this photograph refers to the then Fascist Italian Consul General in Australia. In a letter from Dr. Julian Smith to Cazneaux, he mentions bringing Dr. Grossardi to visit Cazneaux's studio (National Library of Australia). One can only speculate why Cazneaux would refer to himself in such a way. |
