Frank Hurley (1885-1962)
Two important Antarctic expeditions (Mawson in 1911-13, Shackleton in 1914-15) established his career as both a film and still photographer. His reputation grew and he went on to document the First and Second World Wars, as well as accepting private commissions throughout his life. During the 1950s, he was the photographer for numerous publications on Australia.

Annotation "W138 Col. Maitland. M 406". Listed in catalogue "Exhibition of War Photographs in Colour…", 1920s, item 97. After WWI a number of exhibitions of war photographs were held throughout Australia. According to catalogues we have cited, the Colorgraph-Art Company (Windsor, Victoria) states "management can reproduce any picture in the exhibition in the same tone and colour". The notation "W138" refers to the negative number. Taken in Passchendaele.

Annotation "Graham Col M 75". Listed in catalogue "Exhibition of War Photographs in Colour…", 1920s, item 13. Captain Frank Hurley was an official photographer for AIF. After the war, Hurley's war photographs were sold to raise money for the Red Cross and for commercial purposes. His images were available in five sizes in sepia or hand coloured.
