John Kauffmann (1864-1942)
Born in Adelaide, Kauffmann went to London in 1887 and became interested in the European art photography movement. He was influential in introducing pictorialism to Australian photographic circles. By 1917, he was established as a professional photographer in Melbourne. Alway conscious of his role as an artist, his approach was often more radical than other pictorialists.
