Annotated: Cape Royds, Ross Island. Ernest Shackleton’s prefabricated hut erected as the base for the 1907 expedition. Numerous cases of outside the hut. Some cases were marked British Antarctic expedition, others bore the name of the manufacturer or supplier. Corn and hay for the ponies lay on the ground.

Annotated: Prefabricated hut of Ernest Shackleton’s 1907 expedition at Cape Royds, Ross Island. In Oct 1958 when this photo was taken, it was still as left at the conclusion of the expedition with shelves stocked with canned foods, medical supplies etc.

Annotated: Ross Island, Cape Royds. Ernest Shackleton and his men erected their prefabricated hut here on their 1907 expedition. In 1958, when this photograph was taken, foodstuffs, medical supplies and equipment were all still there as if members of the expedition were only out for a brief absence and about to return. A small darkroom, complete with chemicals, stood in one corner of the hut. Ref: Ant G2/4, #613

Annotated: Interior of Ernest Shackleton’s prefabricated hut at Cape Royds, Ross Island, the base of his 1907 expedition. A tent was suspended for drying, skin sleeping bags lay on the bunks and clothing still hung from a nail on the wall at the time this picture was taken in Oct 1958.

Annotated: Bay of Whales area. AH Waite, who was on the Byrd expedition in 1929, while in the US Army Signals Corp, scratches the stomach of a Weddell seal with his fishing rod, something the seal really enjoyed!
