Annotated: The base to which Captain Scott never returned. Situated on the eastern shore of McMurdo Sound, it. like Shackleton's base, is remarkably well-preserved. Inside, with equipment and stores stacked on shelves, pictures on the walls and a copy of The Bystander dated January, 1907, open on the table, it was difficult to dismiss the thought that we had gone back in time and that the expedition had perhaps moved out earlier in the day.
