30 Donald Friend (1915-1989). Love Me, Sailor, 1949. Pen and ink drawing, annotated upper left, signed and dated lower right, 23 x 35.5cm. Minor foxing to surface, crinkles to edges. Framed. JLG4263 Annotation reads: "Ship in a bottle. The artist in relationship to society/ pot/poison bottle/graffiti". Provenance: Lady Drysdale. This drawing, which is related to his painting of the same name, is based on the centre panel depicting Bosch-like characters. Friend was inspired to create the painting and drawing after the author of the banned book "Love Me, Sailor" was "fined and gaoled" (Barry Pearce's "Donald Friend: 1915-1989 retrospective", p 60). |
