77 A Ballad of Buccaneering
c1896.
a) Etching, titled and monogrammed in plate, poem etched on left side of plate, numbered 5 and annotated "printed by Victor Cobb" in margin below, 11.4 x 7.4cm. Slight discolouration to margins; &
b) Pen and ink (manuscript), six stanzas of manuscript dated "Oct. '96.", 36.5 x 12.2cm (paper size). Centre join, minor stains to margins.
Mendelssohn #5, listed as "The Pirate Captain." First line of poem reads "Now alas for buccaneering and the free and flashing days…"

1916. Etching, signed in plate lower right, signed, inscribed and annotated in margin below, 13.8 x 12.6cm. Slight staining to margins and image, two impression marks from previous etching plates.
Mendelssohn #121, listed as "Circular Quay, Sydney, from Admiralty House (Terrace and Sundial, Admiralty House)." Inscribed "To my friend John Young." Young was the owner of Macquarie Galleries. Annotated "From [an early] state [of] Admiralty House." This is a rare working state before the addition of aquatint.

1916. Etching and roulette, signed and inscribed in margin below, 20.2 x 14.3cm. Few wrinkles to surface.
Mendelssohn #127, listed as "Old Chapter House, St Andrew's Cathedral." Rare working proof. Inscribed "To John Young." Young was the owner of Macquarie Galleries.

1918. Etching and aquatint, signed in plate lower right, signed and annotated "first state" on plate below image, inscribed in margin below, 14 x 26.6cm. Few creases and crinkles to image.
Mendelssohn #160, listed as "Dawes Point, Sydney (Observatory Hill)." Inscribed "To my friend John Young. Plate was afterwards cut. I 'cleaned' it up considerably and printed a few proofs in 1932." Rare early working state before final issue.

Mendelssohn #172, listed as "Portrait of Norman Lindsay etching at Faulconbridge." Inscribed "To Dr Herbert Schlink with the etcher's regard. Dec. 1918." Schlink was a noted collector.

Mendelssohn #166, listed as "Hilder Memorial Print." Title continues: "Memorial etching by Lionel Lindsay from the last watercolour painted by J. J. Hilder."

Mendelssohn, p32. One of only four colour woodcuts Lindsay produced during his career; this is the fourth copy of this image I have seen in 27 years.

1921. Etching, signed, inscribed and annotated "first state" in margin below, 11.1 x 13.2cm. Scratches to image upper and lower right.
Mendelssohn #256, listed as "The Tinsmith's Shop, King Street, Sydney (Crabb's, King Street, Sydney)." Inscribed "To my friend John Young." Young was the owner of Macquarie Galleries at that time. This is a working state - a figure is missing from the shop front.
