91 [mersa Matruh Harbour] 1942. Silver gelatin photograph, three-part panorama, dated "7-11-42" and captioned in ink possibly by Hurley at a later date and military censor stamp verso, 15.4 x 51.4cm. Two vertical folds dividing image into three parts, old stains to margin above affecting image. Caption reads "This wonderful view of a peaceful town stretching along the shores of an incredibly blue harbour, is gained as you top a high rise before descending to Mersa Matruh. The town was much as we had left it, and little of value was found. It is little more to-day than a collection of roofless ruins. The D. of I. unit was one of the first to enter, on the heels of the tanks." |
