24 Attrib. Sir Oswald Walters Brierly (British, 1817-1894)
["Wanderer"], c1840. Pencil drawing with white gouache
highlights, 31.7 x 42.6cm. Minor stains to edges.
Provenance:
Ken Stewart estate. Depicts Ben Boyd's
yacht, Wanderer, with its Australian rigging. In 1842 the Wanderer
arrived in Australia with the artist Oswald Brierly aboard. Brierly
produced a pair of lithographs of the Wanderer before leaving
England - one showing English rigging, the other Australian rigging.
I believe this drawing is by Brierly and is a study for the latter
lithograph. Brierly was a very proficient marine artist and the
lithograph is an almost exact copy of this drawing, which contains
extra maritime details.
