Bernhard's
most important photograph in the nude series. Born in Berlin
in 1905, Bernhard moved to New York in 1927 to pursue a career
in photography. Inspired by Edward Weston she eventually moved
to the West Coast and, in 1953, she went to San Francisco and
became a colleague of Ansel Adams, Imogen Cunningham and Minor
White. Adams declared her to be the "greatest photographer
of the nude."

Vintage
prints on matte paper by Bing are very rare, especially when
they are on her own album pages. Bing was one of several leading
European women photographers of the inter-war period. She gave
up an academic career for photography, moving to Paris in 1930
during the Modernist period. She earned a living as a commercial
photographer, working for Le Monde Illustré and Harpers
Bazaar. Bing's proficiency with the camera earned her the title
"Queen of the Leica."
