171 Max Thorek (American, 1880-1960)
Helen Of Troy, c1930s. Vintage silver gelatin photograph, titled
and signed in pencil on backing below image, 23.7 x 31.5cm. Chips
and silvering to edges of image, laid down on slightly distressed
original backing.
Max Thorek
was both a Chicago surgeon and a leading Pictorialist photo-grapher
in the 1930s and 1940s. Thorek preferred working indoors, and
specialized in portraits and female figure studies.

The Critic, 1943/c1950s. Vintage silver gelatin photograph, inscribed,
signed and dated in ink in lower margin, gallery label and photocopy
of note from Henry Rothman attached to frame verso, 23.2 x 19.3cm.
Cracks to upper and lower left corners and slight cockling to
upper edge of image, ink in lower margin has bled.
Inscription
reads "To Henry - 'The Picaso' [sic] of the camera. Weegee.
1976." Rothman's note advises that he received this photograph
from Weegee in 1956, and not 1976, as inscribed. Illustrated
in Barth, Weegee's World, p172. Provenance: Henry Rothman. This
image was first used in Life magazine, December 6 1943. Hungarian
born, Weegee was a pseudonym for Arthur Fellig.

175 Brett Weston (American, 1911-1993)
[Underwater Nude], c1980. Silver gelatin photograph, signed in
pencil on backing below image, 34.7 x 24.3cm. Minor dents to
lower right edge of image.
Weston
produced a series of underwater nudes from 1979 to 1982. The
second son of photographer Edward Weston, Brett's photographs
often approach abstraction, with subjects that are difficult
to decipher. He is best known for his work in the dunes around
Oceano, California, a subject that he shared with his father.

176 Edward Weston (American, 1886-1958)
Nude, 1920/posthumous printing. Platinum photograph, titled and
dated in pencil in another hand, posthumous stamp and signed
in pencil by Cole Weston on backing verso, 19.7 x 23.7cm. Laid
down on backing.
Stamp reads
"Negative by Edward Weston. Printed under the supervision
of [Cole Weston]." Weston was renowned as one of the masters
of 20th century photography. His legacy includes several thousand
carefully composed, superbly printed photographs which have influenced
photographers around the world for 60 years.
