Acquired by the last owner in 1987, who exhibited this drawing throughout Europe and in Florida, USA, between 1988 and 2002.
In 1944, after Chagall’s first wife died, a French-speaking English woman, Virginia McNeil, was hired as his housekeeper. A diplomat’s daughter, bright and cosmopolitan, she became Chagall’s muse and lover until 1951. Their son, David McNeil, was born in 1946 in New York.

Annotations include “20” in red crayon, “page 43”, “523-1” and “…Gustave Coquiot. Verite No. 1. Gustave Coquiot was a noted French writer and art critic, who collaborated with Chagall to produce Suite Provinciale, a fairy tale about the inhabitants of a French village. The Book of Obadiah, consisting of only one chapter, is found both in the Hebrew and Christian bibles. Its authorship is generally attributed to a person named Obadiah, which means “servant or worshipper of the Lord.”
