Etching, 5th edition of 12, published by Calcografia for Real Academia 1881-86, 19.1 x 13.2cm. Harris #79. The 80 etchings of Los Caprichos were the first Goya produced for sale as a single set. In 1803, fearful of the Spanish Inquisition, Goya relinquished the plates to Charles IV in return for a pension for his son. The plates remain with the Calcografia, and have been issued in the ensuing years by that institution. |
