(1) One of Black's most important and desirable images, which together with the gouache and other studies form a unique group. The figure pushing the mower is believed to be the artist herself (North, L17). North, #L17. Coppel, #DB18.
(2) Verso is pencil study for Dutch Peasant (20.8 x 20.2cm, foxing) (see North, #PE4). In the margins are: a small pencil Study for Still Life after Gleizes (5 x 4.8cm) and two designs for posters for Black's Modern Art Centre, Margaret Street, Sydney, c.1932: (1) Linocut, 5.3 x 4.9cm (top of image, turned). Not in Coppel. (2) Pencil study (for the linocut), 15.6 x 4.7cm (right of image).

One of Black's cousins was a volunteer for a group of South Australian women who made quilts for the war effort in England (North, L40). The Pair $30,000

(2) Study for the linocut. Verso: (Study for a Seated Nude), pencil, approx. 24 x 21cm. Pasted over half this image is: Aboriginal Legend of Creation - Adelaide Children's Hospital, 1945, pencil study for the mural in the X-ray & waiting room of Adelaide Children's Hospital, 9.2 x 18.6cm.The mural reproduced: North, p. 96. The mural was destroyed some years later during redecoration. (North, p.94).

Gibbons was a student of Thea Proctor in the late 1920s. She is primarily recognised as a printmaker. This pair is indeed rare, as her watercolours seldom appear on the market.
