101 Paperweight George Reid, c.1905. Cast iron, paint, 12 x 7 x 5cm deep. Rubbed, with overall paint loss. Reid is remembered as one of the founders of Federation, although he had initially opposed it because of the effects of abandoning free trade for NSW. However, following amendments to the draft of 1898 he supported Federation and entered the first Commonwealth Parliament in 1901. He became Prime Minister in 1904. Retiring from Australian politics in 1908, he became the first High Commissioner for the Commonwealth (of Australia) in London. Reid's characteristic portliness and his moustache are clearly visible in this souvenir piece from the founding days of the Commonwealth of Australia. |

103 Sydney Ure Smith The Bookworm, c.1920s. Lithograph, hand-coloured, 39.5 x 22cm. Framed. Tyrell was one of Sydney's best known antiquarian booksellers during the first part of the 20th century. Attached to the back is a letter from James Tyrell (8/6/16) stating he had first seen the image in 1914 when it had immediately appealed as a bookplate and trademark. Very rare. |
