Arthur Neville Chamberlain (1869-1940) was Conservative MP from
1918, Minister of Health from 1924, and British Prime Minister
(1937-1940). Accused of appeasing Hitler to secure
peace
for our time. After his death, Churchill said that he acted
'with perfect sincerity, and strove to the utmost of his capacity
to save the world from the awful, devastating struggle' of World
War II.

The photograph
was possibly taken at the time Evatt become a Justice of the
High Court. In the letter, Evatt wrote that he "apprecieated
receiving such a well written letter from a lad 15 years of age,
who is taking such a keen interest in the affairs of the Australian
Labour Party
,, particularly in relation to the stand I
have taken to uphold the democratic principles against the acts
of a small disruptive clique
" In March 1955 the ALP
Federal Executive began the process to disband "the Groupers".
The ALP then formally split. Seven Victorian Federal MPs left
the Caucus to become the Anti-Communist Labor Party, eventually
the Democratic Labor Party. For decades the bitterness of this
turbulent time was felt within the Labour Party.

15 Lloyd George

Very rare.
Lloyd George (1863-1945), Welsh Liberal MP 1906-1916 (Chancellor
of the Exchequer from 1908) and British Prime Minister from 1916-1922,
introduced old age pensions (1908) and a national insurance scheme
(1911), paving the way for the establishment of the modern Welfare
State after 1945.

16 Phillip Parker King
Autograph letter, signed by Phillip P. King, to E. Thompson,
regarding the Australian Agricultural Company, dated 8th October
1840. 1p, folded 4to.
"Private"
letter to Honble E.O(?) Thompson, regarding the AAC, a fund for
Religious Education, and the Peel Rv and Liverpool Plains Land
Grants. Phillip Parker King (1791-1856), son of Phillip Gidley
King, was a renowned hydrographer and one of the first Australian-born
to reach eminence outside the colony. He became Commissioner
of the Australian Agricultural Company in 1839. It was a turbulent
period for the company, as people attempted to break the monopoly
in coal mining. The Peel Rv and Liverpool Plains Land Grants
had been major holdings of the company.

John Thomas
(Jack) Lang (1876-1975): Treasurer in the NSW Labor government
of 1920-21; Premier and Treasurer of the State twice (1925-27
and 1930-32). His second term, which coincided with the worst
years of the Great Depression, ended with the dismissal of his
government by the State Governor. Defeated as an independent
federal MP in the general election of 1949.

the cricket-loving Menzies with the England and Australian cricket
captains. Robert Gordon Menzies (1894 -1978) is Australia's longest
serving Prime Minister, keeping the top job for 17 years (1939-41
and 1949-66). Changes made during the so-called 'Menzies Era'
have shaped Australian politics today.
