49 Sydney Opera House
Robert Emerson Curtis, (Concert Hall, Sydney Opera House under
construction), 1965-1972. Pencil drawing, signed and dated lower
right, 31.5 x 25cm.
The Sydney
Opera House is one of the most recognisable buildings of the
modern world, and as representative of Australia as the pyramids
are of Egypt. It took 15 years to build, from the demolition
of the tram-shed in August 1958, through Stage 1 (1959-1963),
Stage 2 1963-1967), construction of the roof vaults by Hornibrook
Group, "perhaps the most difficult task of prefabricated
assembly in the history of building", and Stage 3, the glass
walls, interiors, promenade and approaches. The Opera House was
finally opened by Queen Elizabeth II on 20th October 1973.
