A photograph
of the famous actor (1844-1923) in military costume, taken by
Aimé Dupont of Fifth Avenue, N.Y. Sarah Bernhardt, a French
actress, was one of the great international stage stars of her
time, celebrated for her graceful movements and the bell-like
clarity and rich tones of her voice. She made her acting debut
at the Comedie-Francaise in 1862 in the title role of Jean Racine's
classic tragedy Iphigenie. In 1880, Bernhardt broke with the
Comedie-Francaise and spent the rest of her career as a successful
theatre manager and independent touring star, usually leading
her own company. She performed only in French, but still toured
the United States and Canada nine times between 1880 and 1918.
She also made numerous appearances in London and managed several
theatres in Paris. She toured Australia in 1891.

66 Chefalo the Magician
Giant Among Midgets, c.1930s Seven autographs in ink, of Chefalo
(the magician), Jra March (the Czechoslovakian Giant) and five
of Chefalo's "family of midgets", on a page torn from
autograph book, 1p, 9.5 x 13cm. Mounted together with clipping
from The Sun newspaper, Sydney.
The accompanying
clipping shows Chefalo and his "family of midgets"
posing in height order on the roof of The Sun building with "giant"
Jra March, who was 7'1" tall. "The smallest midget
is no taller than 26 inches". They were the main attraction
at a party in aid of The Sun Toy Fund.

68 Ellen Terry

by d'Arony(?), New York, albumen paper print, cabinet format,
16.5 x 10.5cm.
The note
inscribed "Yours truly, Ellen Terry, May 9 1889". Dame
Ellen Terry (1847-1928), actress partner of Henry Irving, the
greatest English actress of the 19th century and one of the greatest
Shakespearean actresses ever to grace the British stage. In 1914
she toured England, Australia, and America giving a series of
popular lectures on Shakespeare's heroines. In 1925, Ellen Terry
was made a Dame of the British Empire.

" Wendall was an agent.
The printed inscription reads: Michael Kermoyan, who is to play
the title role in the Broadway musical hit "Zorba",
the exuberant, lyrical tale of a lusty Greek who teaches everyone
to love dashingly." Whilst Kermoyan appeared in Camelot
and The King & I and Oliver!, we can find no record of his
having actually appeared in Zorba.

English actress, born in Jersey and known as the "Jersey
Lily", painted by Millais, mistress of King Edward VII,
she had a town in Texas, USA, named after her by Judge Roy Bean,
and Oscar Wilde wrote Lady Windermere's Fan for her.

72 Nellie Melba
Autograph note signed, responding to a request for an autograph,
n.p., n.d., 1p., 19.9 x 14.7cm.
The manuscript
note reads: Dear Miss ??, I shall be delighted to give you my
signature. Yrs truly, Nellie Melba. Will this one do? Nellie
Melba (1861-1931), Australian singer of renown, probably the
greatest name among the legendary singers of her time. She was
born in Australia, married and had a child, but abandoned her
family when she decided she wanted to become a singer. She went
to Paris in 1888 to study with Mathilde Marchesi. She made her
debut in Brussels less than a year later, and by the age of 30
was a star in London and Paris.

73 Ignacy Paderewski

Ignacy
Jan Paderewski (1860-1941), born in Kurylowka, Poland. He became
one of Poland's world renowned pianists and composers, widely
praised for his renditions of Chopin. He travelled all over the
world from Africa to Australia and across the European continent;
crossing the Atlantic more than thirty times. He gave more than
1500 concerts in the U.S., appearing in every state and drawing
the largest crowds in history at a time when the solo recital
was still in its infancy. He was the first to give a recital
alone in the newly built Carnegie Hall in New York. He was known
for having perfected the touch that could literally make the
piano sing. In addition to delighting Poland and the world with
his music for over 50 years, Paderewski also became one of Poland's
great statesmen. At the beginning of World War I, Paderewski
founded a committee to assist the people of Poland and established
branches in Paris, London and the United States. His efforts
helped Poland regain her freedom after the war.

Inscribed
"To Mr Eric Howell in gratitude and for remembrance of -
April 22nd 1931 Sydney". Nellie Stewart died on 20th June
1931 (born 1861). She gave her last performance (the balcony
scene from Romeo & Juliet) at Mosman Town Hall. At the height
of her career she was chosen to sing an ode to Australia at the
opening of the first Federal Parliament at the Melbourne Exhibition
Buildings in May 1901.
