J. Barry Humphries (1934-), comedian, actor, artist, author,
poet and raconteur. One of the Sydney Morning Herald's 100 most
influential Australians (24 Jan 2001): "Born in Melbourne,
John Barry Humphries is famed for his one-man satirical theatre
and characters such as Dame Edna Everage and Sir Les Patterson.
He also created the Australian antihero Barry McKenzie. He has
made Australians, and others, look at themselves. They don't
always find an attractive image, but they usually laugh."
After this stage revue (A Load of Olde Stuffe, 1971), he made
the film The Adventures of Barry Mackenzie (1972) with Bruce
Beresford, and his international career was confirmed with the
(Dame) Edna Everage extravaganza, Housewife Superstar! in London
in 1976.
