The note inscribed "Yours truly, Ellen Terry, May 9 1889". Dame Ellen Terry (1847-1928), actress partner of Henry Irving, the greatest 19th century English actress and one of the greatest ever Shakespearean actresses. In 1914 she toured England, Australia and America giving a series of lectures on Shakespeare's heroines. |

Laid down on studio presentation board. Photograph of the famous actor (1844-1923) in military costume, taken by Aimé Dupont of Fifth Avenue, N.Y. The French actress was one of the great international stage stars of her time. She performed only in French, but still toured the USA and Canada nine times between 1880 and 1918. She also managed several theatres in Paris. She toured Australia in 1891. |

Lillie Langtry (1853-1929), English actress, born in Jersey and known as the "Jersey Lily", painted by Millais, mistress of King Edward VII, she had a town in Texas, USA, named after her by Judge Roy Bean, and Oscar Wilde wrote Lady Windermere's Fan for her. |

6 Harry Gist The Two Orphans, 1875. Poster, lithograph, printed by C. Troedel, Collins St (Melbourne), 44 x 36cm. Rare Australian 19th century poster, for the Theatre Royal (Melbourne) production. The Two Orphans was based on a French stage play written in 1874 by Adolphe Philippe d'Ennery and Eugene Cormon. The stage play premiered in New York in 1875 and was an instant success. In 1921 the great film-maker, D.W. Griffiths, adapted it to the screen as Orphans of the Storm starring Lillian & Dorothy Gish. It was the last of his blockbusters. |
