Clarke, 356 George Street, Sydney. Part of a series titled New South Wales: Views in Sydney & Neighbourhood. Also titled in ink on the card "Sydney Railway Station 1850-1855 (Redfern-Strathfield)". Loco No. 1, the first locomotive in NSW to have a passenger carriage, ran in May 1855 to mark the completion of the Long Cove Viaduct at Lewisham. The rest of the Sydney-Parramatta line was officially opened four months later by Loco No. 2. This stereoscopic view shows one of these first two locomotives. |

5 Edward Wolstoneholme Ward attrib. View from St. George Point, Sydney 5.1859 Looking East, 1859. Stereoscopic view, albumen paper prints, titled in ink and signed with initials verso, each image 7.3 x 6.5, the card 8.4 x 7.1cm. Laid down on card. Minor foxing in image and on card. E.W. Ward (active 1856-60) arrived in Sydney in 1854 to take up the position of Deputy Master of the Royal Mint - the Sydney branch being the first overseas branch established. He was also a member of the Legislative Council 1855-6 and 1861-5. A keen amateur photographer, he was one of the founding members of the Philosophical Society of NSW established in May 1856, which brought together a number of gentlemen amateur photographers. His photographs reflect his life in the colony of New South Wales. |

9 Anon Anon. Fort Macquarie, Sydney, c.1870s. Albumen paper print, titled on album page, 15.3 x 20.5cm. Laid down on album page. Some age stains to album page. The site of the Opera House at Benelong Point. The fort, which had been completed by Governor Macquarie and Francis Greenaway in 1821, was demolished in 1910 to make way for the electric tram sheds, which in turn were demolished to make way for the Opera House. Fort Macquarie was built with stone from the Domain collected by convict labour. The photograph shows three of the corner bastions, and Government House can be seen on the hill beyond. |
