93 Nicholas Caire Felling of a large tree, c. 1878. Albumen paper print, 28.5 x 22.3cm. Some discolouration, and repaired tears. Caire's approach to the landscape monumentalised the natural, giving any figures which appear in his photographs an unusual smallness by contrast. Once again, the size of the tree is the centre of focus - the axeman uses a hand adze. |
