This is most likely one of the cut-out dolls Picasso made for his daughter Maya around 1937. Several examples of these dolls are illustrated in the biography by John Richardson, A Life of Picasso: The Prodigy 1881-1906, New York, 2007, p31.

Ines Sassier was a long-time employee of Picasso and was also one of his models and confidantes. Picasso gave her a number of artworks, including drawings and decoupages created especially for her then young son, Gerard. The subjects included animals, cars and circuses.

One of 25 artist's proofs outside the edition of 50. Third and definitive state, with full margins. In Spanish, the language Picasso preferred to French throughout his life, Ines would be Ynes. Many such dedications to Ynes existed among the works from the collection of Ines and Gerard Sassier, making this the most likely provenance. Ines Sassier was a long-time employee of Picasso and was also one of his models and confidantes. Picasso gave her a number of artworks, including drawings and decoupages created especially for her then young son, Gerard. Ref: Bloch #1087, Baer #1307.
