
11 [Gold From Emu
Creek], 1867
Four alluvial gold nuggets, with their original wrapping, bearing
remnants of a red wax seal and inscription in ink with date and
sender's initials, 0.2 x 0.3cm (approx. each nugget) 7.5 x 13.3cm
(wrapper, open). Old folds, creases and stains to wrappers, both
layers featuring stains and perforations caused by presence of
gold.
Inscription
reads "Mar. 25, 67. To dear Mrs Thornycroft, fervently wishing
many happy returns of the day. [signed] J.D., digger. Emu Creek
[NSW]." Likely to have originated from a goldfield town
that sprang up overnight in 1866, west of Cowra, NSW. The town
was firstly named Emu Creek, then later Grenfell in 1867 after
the former Gold Commissioner, John Granville Grenfell, who was
fata`lly wounded by bushrangers. The Grenfell gold fields were
the richest gold mining fields in NSW during 1867-1871.

David's First Victory, c1868. Colour lithograph, artist's signature
and date reproduced in image lower left, 80 x 49.5cm. Slight
stains overall, small perforations to centre of image. Laid down
on canvas as per original presentation. Period frame.
The
original oil painting of this image is held in the Art Gallery
of New South Wales collection. Strutt worked in Australia and
New Zealand between 1850-1862, joining in the gold rush near
Ballarat, Victoria and later became a founding member of the
Victorian Society of Fine Arts.
