Wangaratta flourished from a gold rush and was known as Ovens Crossing Place from 1838 until 1859. The first settler, George Faithfull, named his home from the aboriginal words 'wanga', a cormorant and 'ratta', to sit or nest. The careers of notorious bushrangers Dan 'Mad Dog' Morgan and Ned Kelly both ended respectively in the Wangaratta area, and nearby Glen Rowan.
