of the world." Chief Little Wolf, a Native American and
a professional wrestler and showman, became one of the great
heroes of Australian wrestling. The world heavyweight champion
first wrestled in Australia in 1937, and returned several times
becoming popular during the 1940s. He married an Australian and
settled in Australia during the 1950s. He toured Australia performing
trick horse-riding, told stories about the Navajo culture, displayed
his wrestling holds and did extensive work for charity. In the
Australian wrestling ring, he fought more than a 100 individual
wrestlers in over 1,000 matches.

Queensland-born brothers Philip and George Wirth began their
careers as bandsmen in Ashton's Circus during the 1870s. Eventually,
they formed Wirth's Circus, which became Australia's most prestigious
circus until challenged by Bullen Bros Circus in the 1950s.
