Les Cole, "The Great Levante" (1892-1978), turned professional
by 1910, working in Australian country touring shows and New
Zealand with an escapology act. He performed for many years in
England, returning to Australia at the outbreak of WWII. Levante
was awarded both the Performing Fellowship and the Masters Fellowship
by the Academy of Magical Arts. He was considered to be superior
to Houdini.

Carrington Walters, better known as Murray the Escapologist,
was born at Brighton, Victoria, November 11 1901. He toured the
world with an illusion show and used his escape acts as a means
of publicity. He is attributed with having coined the word "escapologist."
Murray retired to Blackpool, England where he opened a magic
shop. Held in National Library of Australia collection.

Buddy Williams, born 1918, began life in an orphanage in Glebe
and later ran away from his foster parents' farm. He started
performing as a busker in the mid 1930s, and made his first recording
with EMI (Columbia) in 1939. He is said to be the first Australian-born
country music artist on record. After serving in WWII, he toured
extensively around Australia. He died in 1986.
