119 Harold Salvage
Collection 1937
Consisting of eight silver gelatin photographs: a later printing
of Sunbaker and seven rare vintage photographs of Max Dupain's
friends camping on the south coast of New South Wales, where
Sunbaker was photographed.
The
collection features Harold Salvage (1905-1991), Dupain's friend
and the subject of Sunbaker. Dupain stated that Sunbaker came
about "when one of my friends [Salvage] leapt out of the
surf and slammed down onto the beach to have a sunbake."
An architectural engineer, Salvage was born in Worcester, England
in 1905 and emigrated to Australia around 1925. Salvage shared
Dupain's passion for rowing and beach life. Provenance: Salvage
family.
