Edward
Detmold and his twin brother Maurice were child prodigies tutored
by an uncle who fostered their artistic talents and a love for
natural history. They began exhibiting at the Royal Academy at
the age of 13, influenced by Japanese colour prints and drawings.
Their work was used to illustrate numerous books. The twins collaborated
successfully on drawings and etchings until Maurice committed
suicide in 1908, leaving Edward to work alone.
