Norman Lindsay wrote The Magic Pudding in 1918. Since then generations of Australian children have read this classic Australian adventure story about Albert, Bunyip Bluegum, Sam Sawnoff, Bill Barnacle and the Puddin' thieves.
Lindsay had a wager that children were more interested in reading about food than fairies - a bet that Lindsay clearly won. Albert, the gravy-voiced Pudding, has the extraordinary talent of never ending, as well as transforming into all sorts of delicious sweet and savoury treats. Albert's ability to be thoroughly rude as well as escaping at the drop of a basin has made him a hero for many a young boy.
Like Mickey Mouse, The Magic Pudding is over 80 years old. Over that time the recipe has changed little. Occasionally it is written in Spanish, French, Portuguese or even Japanese. Other variations to the recipe include radio adaptations, serialisation in school magazines, and marionette and rod puppet productions.
With the release in December 2000 of the full length animated feature film of The Magic Pudding, Lindsay's classic moves into the new century. Even though Energee Entertainment has used the very latest technology to create the film, the inspiration for the animators has remained the original Lindsay drawings.
The animators have been fortunate that Lindsay created characters which were much more three dimensional than is usual in illustrative work. There is an enormous difference between a static image and one which has to move all around a large screen. The drawings Energee have created for The Magic Pudding film have all the charm and vitality of those drawn for the first edition. Without diminishing the spirit of adventure the modern animators have given Lindsay's tale a contemporary feel.
The drawings used in the movie production being exhibited are the pencil and pen drawings of the character concepts, rough studies, story boards and finished drawings All drawings, mounted in a specially designed presentation matte, come with a Certificate of Authenticity giving the name of the character and description of the scene in which the drawing appears. A blind stamp and an identification number are further guarantees of authenticity.
The Magic Pudding has become part of the Australian vernacular: everything from the economy to Sydney real estate can today be described as "a magic pudding". Lindsay would have been pleased to know that he had baked an artistic pudding big enough for everyone to enjoy and to inspire others to further creation.
