Australia. Land Of Tomorrow
c1948. Colour lithograph, initialled in image lower right, 100.3 x 74.9cm. Repaired tears, creases and slight paper loss to edges of image and margins. Linen-backed. Text continues “Printed in Australia and issued by the Commonwealth Department of Information.” The NSW Migration Heritage Centre states the “creator of this poster, Joe Greenberg, was told later by a Czech migrant that it had been displayed in all the migrant camps in Europe, and had influenced him to come to Australia.” The National Archives of Australia holds a copy of this poster and includes the following information on its website: “‘I want 20,000,000 people in Australia and I want them in my lifetime.’ So said Arthur Calwell, Minister for Immigration, in 1948. A rapid increase in population was vital to the success of Australia’s postwar plans for defence and economic development. For the first time, the Australian Government looked beyond Britain [to Europe] for the people who would be ‘tomorrow’s Australians’.”
