The National Archives of Australia holds a copy of this poster and includes the following information on its website: “‘I want 20,000,000 people in Australia and I want them in my lifetime.’ So said Arthur Calwell, Minister for Immigration, in 1948. A rapid increase in population was vital to the success of Australia’s postwar plans for defence and economic development. For the first time, the Australian Government looked beyond Britain [to Europe] for the people who would be ‘tomorrow’s Australians’.”
