c1838. Hand-coloured lithograph, text including artist’s name and title above and below image, 26.3 x 40.1cm. Slight discolouration, stains to margins. Framed. Text includes “Voyage la frégate la Vénus. Atlas pittoresque. Ménard del’t. Lith. de Thierry frères. Lith. par Bichebois. Fig. par Bayot. Pendant le séjour de la Vénus en 1838.” A rare view of Sydney based on a more European interpretation of the original 1833 drawing by Charles Rodius: the Aborigines in the foreground have been removed and French soldiers have been added. G.J. Austin, an early Sydney lithographer, also made a print of this view after the Rodius drawing in 1836. Ref: NLA, SLNSW.
