HMAS “Australia”

c1955. Drypoint, titled and signed in pencil in lower margin, typed annotation on label affixed to frame verso, 15.3 x 28.4cm. Discolouration overall. In original frame.

Label reads “Frame made from teak, old Australia’s deck.” Held in SLNSW collection. HMAS Australia (II) was commissioned in 1928. During WWII Australia (known as “The Aussie”) saw extensive action in the Pacific and survived numerous attacks by kamikazes, suffering heavy casualties and damage. She was finally withdrawn from the front line and by the time she had been repaired in Plymouth, England, the war was over. HMAS Australia returned for further service in the Royal Australian Navy and was decommissioned in 1954 and sold for scrapping in 1955. Ref: Wiki.
