John Dunmore Lang’s Victoria Land League Membership Card

1857. Engraving on card, dated in plate lower centre, inscribed and signed in various hands in ink, 7.8 x 11.4cm. Slight foxing.

Text includes “J. Mitchell sc. 69 Collins St West.” The membership card belonged to the Rev. John Dunmore Lang, (1799-1878) who was a Scottish-born Australian Presbyterian minister, writer, politician and activist. He was the first prominent advocate of an independent Australian nation and of Australian republicanism. The Victoria Land League and Land Convention was established in 1857 to fight the Haines government’s land bill that advocated an alternative measure based on free selection, abolition of sale by auction and open pasturage over crown lands. Well-known public figures of the time had a deputation to request the government to withdraw its land bill. Ref: ADB.
