[Captain Arthur Phillip]
1786/1936. Mezzotint on chine collé, proof before letters and colouring, signed and annotated “2nd state proof in progress” in pencil below image, 62.9 x 42.7cm. Minor soiling, crinkles and tears to plate mark and margins. Engraved by Henry Macbeth-Raeburn after a 1786 oil painting by Francis Wheatley. This mezzotint, normally issued with hand-colouring, is a rare uncoloured proof. The portrait, depicting Phillip in his captain’s uniform, standing on a coastal shore, was painted in 1786 probably in anticipation of his voyage to Australia. Ref: NPG, UK, NLA. This image is the only large, full-length portrait of Captain Phillip.
