c1881. Albumen paper photograph, captioned in ink on backing above and below image, 14.9 x 20.7cm. Minor foxing and retouching to centre of image, laid down on original backing. Caption reads “Taken at the Governor Sir Arthur Kennedy’s House, Brisbane, Queensland. Peter G. Grant, John Robinson, M. Inst. C.E., J. Sanderson Lyster, Major General the Hon. Wm. Feilding, of the Australian Trans-Continental Railway Expedition.” Extract from The Argus (Melbourne newspaper) on 12 August 1881: “The overland expedition which left Brisbane for the Gulf of Carpentaria last Thursday is under the command of General Feilding, representative of the English capitalists who have been invited to undertake the construction of the proposed transcontinental railway. Mr. John Robinson, an experienced English railway engineer, is a member of the party, which also includes Messrs. Peter Grant and Harry Raff, surveyors and experienced bushmen ; Mr. Lyster, late of the 71st Highlanders, and son of the famous civil engineer of the Liverpool Docks..:”
