Album Pertaining To Sir George Ruthven Le Hunte
c1890s-1900s. Comprising 69 photographs, of which 46 are printout paper and 23 are vintage silver gelatin photographs with three process screen prints in postcard format, some images captioned or dated in ink or pencil on backing, one image, which appears to have been reprinted circa 1960, is annotated in pencil verso and is accompanied by an envelope addressed to “Mayor John Le Hunte, Gledhlow Gardens, London SW5,” postmarked “1961”, sizes from 8.1 x 5.4cm to 15.4 x 20.3cm (photographs), 38.7 x 32cm (album). Slight scuffs, silvering or fading to some images, most laid down on original album pages, some loose images and pages from a different album. The album includes photographs of military and naval parades and other civic events, group portraits with various dignitaries, some family portraits and informal scenes around the family home in South Australia, and some family and landscape photographs taken in England. Sir George Ruthven Le Hunte KCMG (Brit., 1852-1925) was Governor of South Australia from 1903 to 1909, soon after the federation of Australia. Le Hunte served as President of Dominica, Secretary of Barbados and Mauritius, and Lieutenant-Governor of British New Guinea. As South Australian Governor, he became the first patron of the Royal Automobile Association of South Australia when it was formed in 1903. Towards the end of his career he was Governor of Trinidad and Tobago. The District Council of Le Hunte in the north of Eyre Peninsula was named after him before it was changed to Wudinna District Council in 2008. Ref: Wiki.
