Tennyson Cole’s Studio, South Yarra, Melbourne, Victoria

1891. Printout paper photograph, titled and dated in ink, with photographer’s label and slips of newsprint dated in ink affixed to backing verso, 15.9 x 21.7cm. Minor scuffs to surface, paper loss to edges, laid down on original backing.

Label reads “Mr. N.J. Caire, Landscape Photographer, Toorak Road, South Yarra.” Newsprint includes articles on portrait painter Philip Tennyson Cole from The Argus, The Age, and The Standard, from 3-7/9/1891. Philip Tennyson Cole (Brit., 1862-1939), a fashionable portrait painter of prominent personages and an amateur singer, travelled extensively, spending time in Australia from 1889. He attracted some notoriety due to a charge of wife desertion in New Zealand. Ref: NPG (UK), DAAO.
