[Snowy Mountains Views, Including Mt Kosciuszko]

c1892. Group of 13 vintage silver gelatin photographs, each captioned in pencil or ink verso, including two signed “J. Brooks” and dated “April 1892”, sizes from 10.4 x 17.4cm to 12.2 x 18.7cm. Minor scuffs, wear, discolouration, slight creases, paper loss.

Locations depicted include views of Mt Kosciuszko, Dome Rocks, Lake May (the highest lake in Australia), Meuller’s Peak, Rams Head Peak, Mt Dromedary and the Rams’ Heads. Captioned “My observatory on Kosciuszko”, one of the photographs shows a makeshift structure, and includes the names of a party of nine comprising five members of the Brooks family and four crew members.

Joseph Brooks was an important surveyor, astronomer and photographer. He joined the South Australian Department of Survey and Crown Lands in 1864 as a draftsman and photographer, and in 1869 went on expedition with about 150 men to the Northern Territory, leading to the establishment of the town of Palmerston (Darwin). In 1877 Brooks joined the Department of Lands in Sydney as a surveyor and was a major contributor in the surveying of NSW (being an intrepid explorer and mountain climber, Brooks travelled to near-inaccessible areas).
