Collection Relating To A.J. Fischer, Australian Artist
c1899-1920s. Consisting of 15 items comprising six albumen paper and six vintage silver gelatin photographs, one letterpress and lineblock booklet, and two process screen images, one of which is affixed to a letterpress card, two photographs with photographer’s line “Henry King, Sydney” embossed on backing below image, sizes from 7 x 9.5cm to 21.6 x 16.6cm. Slight, creases, missing portions, foxing, wear. The collection includes issue 2 (February 1899) of The Bookfellow, a rare monthly magazine for book-buyers and readers, which had cover illustrations by A.J. Fischer. Eight of the photographs are of Fischer’s paintings, one with wash applied by hand. Born in NSW, Amandus Julius Fischer (1859-1948) was a renowned cartoonist, painter and prolific illustrator of his time. He contributed to a number of newspapers and magazines including the Illustrated Sydney News and the Town and Country Journal. Fischer is best known for his 1890s Bulletin cartoons. His work was exhibited at the 1898 Grafton Gallery exhibition “Australian Art in London.’’ He helped illustrate Steele Rudd’s On Our Selection, published in 1899.
