The Gadfly was an illustrated weekly periodical founded by C.J. Dennis in Adelaide in 1906 to showcase his and 16-year-old co-founder Archie Martin’s writing talents. The magazine featured stories, verse and articles on the arts and the general Australian social scene. The two founders started the venture on limited funds of £100 raised through family and friends. The magazine lasted for three years. The staff of The Gadfly consisted of C.J. Dennis, editor; Archie Martin, sub-editor; Beaumont Smith, drama and sport; writer Geoffrey Burgoyne; journalist Alice Grant Rosman; and Will Donald, artist. Ref: AusLit; ADB.
