Group of five letterpress booklets with colour lineblock and process screen illustrations, each dated on cover, some images with artist’s signature replicated in image, sizes from 15.3 x 10.4cm to 23.9 x 31.5cm. Slight soiling, wear, tears and creases to covers and pages, repairs to spine. Details for booklets on the American fleet include: a cover illustration by Harry Weston and images of the American fleet in Sydney Harbour, and a fold-out panorama of Sydney Harbour, printed by John Sands, Sydney; images of the fleet in Melbourne, printed by “Osboldstone & Co., printers and publishers, Little Collins Street”; information on NSW with the title of “A Welcome to New South Wales, Australia, for the United States Fleet”; and a “Programme for Sydney, 20th-27th August, 1908”, printed by William Applegate Gullick, Government Printer, Sydney. Known as the Great White Fleet, the American convoy was the first major visit by any foreign naval power to Australia since federation. The fleet, which consisted of 16 battleships painted white, toured the world as a demonstration of US naval might. The visit attracted a quarter of the Australian population, who welcomed the fleet at the wharves of Sydney, Melbourne and Albany.
