Throughout WWI, in Australia, “an estimated 10,000 patriotic clubs, societies and sewing circles sprang up to knit socks, vests, mufflers and mittens, pack parcels of cakes, magazines, medical and recreational equipment, kitchen appliances and tobacco and write encouraging letters to men they had never met. It amounted ‘to a completely new sector of the economy’ and was arguably central to the war effort.” Ref: International Encyclopedia of the First World War.
