Hu Boxiang (Chinese, 1896-1989).

c1925. Vintage silver gelatin photograph, 28.3 x 38cm. Missing portion to upper right corner of negative, minor soiling, creases and cracks to edges of image, uneven margins.

One of the steam boats pictured is named “[Kwaido] Shanghai.” Provenance: W.A. Pennell estate.

An Englishman, Mr Pennell was head of the advertising department of the British American Tobacco Company in Shanghai during the 1920s and 1930s. He was an accomplished artist who taught and employed local Chinese artists. Pennell and his family emigrated to Australia in 1936.
