XXXX. The Popular Beer

c1960s. Colour screenprint, 75.7 x 50.3cm. Slight crazing, repaired minor tears and discolouration to edges. Linen-backed.

Text continues ‘‘Always a winner.” Image includes the beer’s mascot ‘Mr Fourex’, who was created in 1924, along with the XXXX brand. The brand name alludes to the traditional use of “Xs” to indicate the strength of an ale.

The beer, officially known as ‘Castlemaine XXXX’ was named after the town of Castlemaine in Victoria where the company was first established in 1857. Although the brewery has since relocated to Milton, Queensland, the beer still shows the old Castlemaine Brewery on its packaging. Ref: Wiki.
