Wrangoo. Austral Red Wine

1933. Colour lithograph, signed in image lower right, 25.5 x 50.5cm. Repaired tears to edges. Linen-backed.

Text continues “3’-. Gilbey’s. Issued by W&A Gilbey Ltd D176.” Held in V&A; and NLA with the comment “The American-born artist and graphic designer Edward McKnight Kauffer…worked in London before 1940, where he created influential advertising posters during the 1920s and 1930s for the London Underground, Shell Oil and other commercial clients. In 1933 he designed seven point-of-purchase posters for Gilbey’s, the British wine and liquor distributor, now known mainly for their gin.

Gilbey’s started exporting to and from Australia in the 19th century, and later developed additional local interests, making a decision to open a distillery in Melbourne in 1929, which ceased operating in 1985. Wrangoo, a name probably derived from kangaroo, was one of Gilbey’s line of ‘Austral’ wines, which they began marketing [in 1927]...These wines were initially drunk mostly in modest homes, but grew in popularity after the economic crisis of September 1931.”
