1869. Albumen paper photograph, 21.6 x 28.1cm. Repaired minor tears to lower corners and left edge. Ceremonial arches and bamboo canopies were erected on various roads, including Bonham Strand, for the celebration of the visit to Hong Kong of the Duke of Edinburgh in 1869. John Thomson was a pioneering Scottish photographer, geographer, and traveller. He was one of the first photographers to travel to the Far East, documenting the people, landscapes and artefacts.
