[Abstract Figure]
c1930s. Charcoal drawing, artist’s signature stamped lower right, annotated “Bacon” and “5” in pencil and ink in unknown hand verso, 22.5 x 10cm. Foxing to image centre and edges, minor stain to image upper centre, slight discolouration to edges of paper. A faint abstract sketch appears verso. Provenance: Philip Bacon Galleries. One of the pioneers of modern Australian painting, Roy de Maistre, shared a studio with Francis Bacon in London during the 1930s. It may be that the two artists influenced each other during this period. Ref: AGNSW; Wiki. This drawing is unusual as Roy de Maestre’s subjects are normally more figurative.
