1968. Vintage silver gelatin photograph, titled, annotated, dated and signed in ink on backing verso, 39.7 x 46.8cm. Slight foxing, silvering and minor chips to edges, laid down on original backing. Annotation reads “Cheragum [village], Haus Tambaran, Sepik 167.” Similar image illustrated in Smith, New Guinea: a journey through 10,000 years, 1969, p9, with the comment “Men of Cheragum Village near Maprik dressed and decorated for part of an initiation ceremony. The men move in a circle in front of the haus tambaran to the beat of drums. No women are allowed to attend.” A “haus tambaran” is a type of traditional ancestral worship house in the East Sepik region of Papua New Guinea. Ref: Wiki.
