Claremont [Rose Bay, NSW]
1867. Pencil drawing, titled, initialled twice and dated in pencil lower left and centre, 18.5 x 27.9cm. Slight foxing, minor tears and creases. Claremont in Rose Bay, NSW, was built from 1851 to 1852 for “Bristol-born Sydney businessman George Thorne (1810–1891) who had migrated to Australia in 1840. He married Elizabeth Ann Bisdee in Hobart in 1842. They had 10 children [one of whom was Rosalie]…George Thorne retained ownership of Claremont until early 1879 but the family did not reside in the house continuously.” Claremont formed the original building of Kincoppal School in 1882.
